Hi could I have a post please? Nbr, my mum had a bloodied anyone d transfusion in 2015 after her hemagloben (not sure how to spell it) being as low as five, she got her bloods done on Friday and was told that it was sitting at 75, I’m sure the doctor said they like it to be between 80 and 90 but I’m not 100% sure, she suffers with anxiety and depression and also has agraphobia, the doctors phoned her back on Friday afternoon and wanted her to go to hospital but due to her health she couldn’t go so the doctor gave her an appointment at the doctors for Monday morning, my question does anyone know what will they do? Will she get iron supplements to see if that will help or will the transfer her to the hospital for a blood transfusion again? Thanks in advance.

  • Iron tablets probably. Blood transfusion is a last resort now, and they look at more than just the HB – if the patient is clinically well, then a transfusion isn’t always necessary

  • I had a haemoglobin level of 4.5 I was told if I’d had one more period , my major organs would of shut down and I would have had heart failure, I was given an emergency blood transfusion of 4 units, upon discharge I was given a high dosage of oral iron tablets, given a scan of the womb where it was found I had a huge fibroid, I then opted for a hysterectomy

  • The best is over 100 for haemoglobin but I think 80-100 is ok. Not great, but ok. I think anything less than that is definitely not great at all x
