Age Appropriate Chores For Children

Below is a list of age appropriate chores according to parenting experts.

Toddlers (ages 2-3)

  • Put away toys

  • Unload the dishwasher (plastic cups and plates etc not china or glass)

  • Do the dusting with a feather duster

  • Collect dirty clothes

  • Help move clothes from washing machine to tumble dryer

  • Make their bed

  • Wipe down tables and work surfaces

Preschooler (4-5)

  • All previous chores

  • Load the dishwasher

  • vacuum chairs/cushions

  • Take out recycling

  • Set the dinner table

  • Clear table

  • Wash dishes (with supervision)

  • Clean windows

  • Wipe out sinks

  • Match socks

  • Fold towels

  • Pull up weeds

  • Water indoor plants

  • Feed pets

Children aged between 6 and 8

  • All previous chores

  • Help prep meals (peel potatoes, chop veg)

  • Peg out laundry

  • Sweep

  • Vacuum all areas including stairs

  • Put bins out with supervision

  • Fold laundry

  • Water garden

  • Wash the car

Children aged between 9 and 11

  • All previous chores

  • Make simple meals unsupervised

  • Wash, dry and sort clothes

  • Clean toilet and bath

  • Mop floors

  • Clean out pets

  • Walk and wash dog

Children aged between 12 and 14

  • All previous chores

  • Bleach surfaces

  • Make full meals for the family

  • Clean out fridge

  • Iron clothes

  • Cut the grass

  • Supervise younger siblings with their chores

Children 14+

  • All previous chores

  • Help with Family budgeting

  • Babysit for younger siblings

  • Write shopping lists

  • Do weekly shop

  • Trim hedges

  • Help with decorating
