Can I have a private post please?
Me and my Mother-in-law have had a massive fall out.
She works nights and some times days now as she is in a lot of debt, she literally works non stop, her house was a bit of a mess, so I thought I would clean it for her as a surprise, I do this with my mother and Grandmother and they really appreciate it. So when she was at work I cleaned the house through, vaccumed, washed clothes, ironed clothes, etc.
She came home and was furious, saying that I was calling her lazy and a terrible wife because the house is untidy. She told me she doesn’t want to see me and my daughter anymore because I am always in the way and making her feel like she’s useless.
I have apologised and this is the first time I’ve ever cleaned the house, I only see her every week or so for an hour tops. So I don’t see how I’m ‘always’ doing things wrong?
I don’t know what to do now, I feel bad for putting her down as she suffers with depression. What steps should I take next?

  • Some people are happy to accept help others are not so, she may have just felt insulted by your tidying thinking you thought she was messy ect, maybe let the heat calm down and just kindly explain it was only done to give her a little break, after all if she works most of the time it would soon mount up. Dont listen to her, she was obviously uoset and over reacted…pride can do many things to people xxxx

  • She probably feels embarassed that you cleaned up for her. It was a nice gesture but i think its her own issues that caused the reaction.

  • Don’t blame her – I’d be furious if someone did that in my house, totally invaded her space….

  • If you only see her for an how a week it is a bit weird to clean her house randomly
