Hi can I have a private post please,

I’m just looking for some advice and opinions please,

I have just found out today that in September when my daughter returns to school ( going in to year 1 ) she will be going into a mixed year class of reception children, year 1s and year twos and I have been told by several other parents it will be the same throughout the whole school all mixed up classes,

I myself can’t understand how this will work with three different age groups/learning stages all learning together in one classroom, is this something that has changed across the nation and is now what is happening everywhere? I just can’t work out how this is supposed to work.

I am considering moving my daughter to a different school but I’m not sure if I’m just missing the point and it’s actually a good thing.

Thanks

  • Can you please post a response on my status, thankyou everyone for the comments, it is a small school with what was 1 class per year I sort of see it better now, I just couldn’t understand the learning side of things but it does make sense to me now. Thankyou

  • I worked in a school Ike that yr1&2s were mixed up! It does not work. Year 1 are five & 6 year twos are 7 and much more mature compared. The work they do should be different and from my experience year twos were left behind a bit because they made them do the same work as year twos. I would agree with you in moving her to give her her best chance

  • I’m guessing they will be grouped by ability for focus activities. As they are still foundation stage they will be learning through play for a percentage of the time independently. I personally wouldn’t have an
Issue, maybe ask the school for the set up? My daughter is also going into year 1 which is mixed with year 2 and they rotate around teachers in the class x

  • This usually happens if a school doesn’t have enough pupils to make up a full class (at least, that’s why my son’s school have a mixed class this year). It’s not as bad as you’re thinking it is. The kids will still be taught on an age appropriate basis, the curriculum is the exact same across all the years (all the school will do the same subjects each term). Why don’t you talk to her school before deciding?

  • My kids go to a school with only 3 classrooms so every class is mixed. P1&2, P3,4,5 and P6&7. It seems to really work and creates a strong community within the school. I was in mixed classes for first 5yrs of primary and I think I benefited as I was one of the youngest in my year. When I moved to one class I fest really behind and out of place, especially when I reached secondary school.
I really think it’s not something to worry about and is actually beneficial.

  • Children aren’t taught as a class they are taught now in groups based on their ability. It would be the same if it was only a year 1 year one class. She’ll be fine. I’m in Scotland and have a daughter in primary she’s been in a composite class the last 2 years she’s come on so much both academically and socially.

  • Is her school a small school? If the number of children is the classrooms is low, they will put the classes together as there is no point in having 3 small classes. Where I live it is very common to have the classrooms mixed, I have also personally taught in these classrooms, all children will still be given the work which challenges them for their ability, she will still be learning the same as though she was in a classroom with only her year group. • In my daughters school she is going into year 1/2 the eldest of year one and yougest of year. The class for the whole school go, reception (3 classes), year 1a 1b and 1/2, year 2, year 3/4, year 4, year 5, year 5/6, year 6. Its based on abilty and age. This school has alot of children in each year. Thats why we have mixed classes aswell. Xx

  • I know they do it in secondary school as my son does it he finds it great. I don’t think they will spend all day together as surely they all have different abilities and targets, such as year two sats etc x

  • It will be based on ability. Not all children work at the same pace/level, some y2’s may be underachieving some in reception maybe over achieving and some where they should be so they will mix year groups based on ability x
