Hi, could I please have a private post
Are there any parents on here who home school? My eldest daughter is 4 years old and has high functioning autism. She’s due to start primary school this September and I’m worried she won’t be able to cope with full time school. She goes to a private nursery at the moment for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. She’s been going for almost a year now and has only managed a full week twice! We’re in the process of getting a plan in place to see how much support she can have and in what form it takes. She’s incredibly clever, she had number and letter recognition at 18 months and she’s suspected of having a photographic memory. She’s really sensitive and gentle and worries a lot, she also won’t defend herself and I’m worried about her being bullied because her speech is difficult to understand and I was bullied for years so I’m considering home school. My back ground is in early years care and education so it’s something I can do, but would I be denying my daughter the school experience??? No bashing please.

  • Have you considered special needs school so she’s with children similar to herself and doesn’t feel different? The schools are incredible and they do so so much and support both children and parents amazingly! My son is going through various test and appointments atm as it’s believed he has additional needs and as much as I want him to go to a mainstream school, if it couldn’t give him the support for his needs then I would have to look into special needs school for his benefit xx

  • Hey i wouldnt worry what others think you have every right to be worried your children are your life , have u looked around at schools who cater for children’s higher needs rather than mainsteam x

  • I understand where your coming from, I was picked on abit in high school not as bad as what other people have been through but enough to make me hate school!! And I’ve even thought once I have kids I’ll want to homeschool but I’m not exactly the smartest person so I couldn’t teach my child anything😂 and honestly them going to school doesn’t only teach them about life and Maths it teaches them friendships and how to share and how to interact with people!! Have you thought about a special needs school? My older brother went to one from primary through to secondary and my younger brother is finishing his last year in high school this year but only done the high school as isn’t got bad needs like my older brother, and honestly I think it’s great! They only have about 5-6 people to a class and its basically a school who knows all the kids needs!! Xx

  • There are so many schools with amazing SEN departments and support. Speak to them see what they can offer her then make your decision. It would be good for her to have the experience school as long as she’s supported.
