I’m looking for some advice around how to manage a sudden unexpected cut in benefits. I’m a single mum to 6 children and have been getting tax credits and child benefit income support and carers allowance since they cut my disability living allowance earlier this year. Yesterday (Saturday) I got a letter from tax credits saying that due to overpayment our weekly payments have been reduced from £560 to £233 until April. This was totally unexpected and Id like advice on how to manage this week as ive already agreed to pay a bailiff £100 on Monday before noon or they will take my car away due to a long disputed parking fine that I lost on appeal. I desperately need to hang on to my car as I have a severely disabled child with autism who refuses to walk and needs to be taken to and from school. This week should be the hardest and will need to learn to manage until April on the lower amount. Really need suggestions of things I can cut and how to manage. Thanks in advance.

  • Oh bless you, must be really tough. Firstly,do u get help from your children’s dad? As in,do they pay their way. Secondly, could you ask gp/health visitor/social worker to refer you for help using local food banks? And thirdly, I think someone else suggested citizens advice, too. Hope it all works out xx
