So yesterday my son asked the innocent question “why are some people brown and I am white”
I’m looking for some advice to answer this in a way he understands.
I initially answered (we have pet rats)
“you have a black rat and a white rat, but they are both still rats” as I didn’t know how to structure this conversation. Anyone got any stories I could use

I know 😂 it was the first thing that came to me as we unintentionally don’t really have a multicultural circle of friends or family and they were just there next to me so I went with it lol
Humans are many different colours and come from many places around the world ….depending on how much sun a country gets the people of that area can be white with little sun and darker with more intense sun ….can lead into a geography lesson also
Kids can be funny with their innocence! I remember my boy (now 14) asking when he was little, we live in a small village & there was only white kids at school. Ainsley Harriet was on TV and he said “mummy, you know that man is brown… What colour are his bogies”?!!!! Still makes me chuckle!!
i did something similar with our bunny rabbits lol they were brown black white and spotty …. and yes i went on about the sun and differences but that was a little over her head. so comparing them to rabbits was actually useful
Just explain that just as people have different colour eyes and hair people also have different colour skin. Maybe start taking them somewhere a bit more multicultural too.
Just explain that that’s the way people are made, when they grow in the mommys belly just like picking if you will be a girl or a boy it picks your skin colour to.
Don’t use the sun that’s incorrect and I find it ignorant, my son is mixed race and some of the comments like that really pee me off.
It’s got nothing to do with different countries anymore as everywhere is pretty multi cultural and besides you have had full white families birth black babies and black families birth white children lol its pigment in the skin that’s all x
Can remember my son asking an i came out with something about the different countries ect. He then came out with. Well i want to live where Bart does so i can be yellow. Just answer honestly
Just explain that everyone is still the same just some are white and some are brown but doesnt make anyone any different to each other just keep it simple hun x
I probably wouldn’t have compared them to rats personally.. 🙈
