Can I have a private post please? Need some advice.

So my stepson I strongly suspect has either autism or is on the spectrum his behaviour is very autistic. I’ve brought it up to my partner/his dad that I’m worried about him but he dosnt see anything and sees any sort of illness as a ‘weakness’ the mum is the same. I havnt come to this conclusion lightly I work with learning disabilities and saw the signs I find it a real struggle to sit and watch when both his partners have their head in the sand and thinks nothing is wrong it’s hurtful I feel so bad for my stepson he’s only two. Please help I’m getting to the end of my tether it’s so very obvious yet none of them are willing to accept it and get help :,( it’s breaking my heart!

  • I had these concerns when my daughter was little but family dismissed it and said I was wrong. Anyways the older she got the more apparent it became and she was diagnosed a few years ago, however, had she had the help sooner then I’m sure some of her difficulties could’ve been assisted with the appropriate measures in place. What can you do if the parents won’t pursue it though? I hope he gets the necessary tests if needed x

  • Thier are many conditions that display similar symptoms and behavior and your not qualified to diagnose anything. It is also among the most over diagnosed or misdiagnosed conditions. As a step parent it would probably be best if you tread lightly around the subject, and once the child’s parents are on board still suggest 2nd and 3rd opinions. Don’t rely on the diagnosis of one professional to determine the path of treatment for the rest of that child’s life.

  • Some parents will be in denial about things like this and will naturally defend their child. All I can suggest is you back off the subject and if it does happen to be the case he has autism it will be picked up eventually by a professional outside of the family xx
