Can I have a private post please

I currently have a one bed flat with my parter and our 1 &1/2 year old
We can’t afford to move but keep getting told we can apply for housing benefit to help. Does anyone know how this works? I know we have to have the deposit and a months rent first but after that will we get help? What if the house we get says “does not allow housing benefit” would we not be entitled to help then? I’m so confused
