Could I get a private post please. Just looking for some honest opinions on whether I’m over reacting. My brother and his gf are together 5 years. We only see each other maybe 5 times a year, I don’t like his gf but have always been friendly. I separated from my fiance in May. I have 4 children, 2 have autism so it’s tough but I’m doing well. Ex had addiction issues and cheated on me. My whole family knew this. My parents have been great, really supportive, didn’t hear a thing from my brother and gf but that was fine, we don’t have that kind of relationship. In September they called to my house one Sunday. I was dressed in a tracksuit bottoms and hoodie, I was cleaning the house so not dressed up. His gf started telling me that I’m obviously not coping because I’m going round looking a mess and my house is a state. My house is clean. It’s often untidy, but it’s clean. She then proceeded to slag off my best friend who she has never even met and who helps and supports me more than anyone else. I was too shocked to even answer her and she eventually left. Usually we all go to my parents for Christmas. I told mum I wasn’t going this year, I didn’t feel ready to face gf after the things she said, they really upset me. Mum understood and we arranged that me and DC’s would go on Boxing Day instead. Last night brother and the gf rang me at 4 am ranting and swearing at me for ruining Christmas. They were drunk. My brother sent nasty texts too telling me to “F off” and “Get f***ed”. So did I overreact? Should I have just tolerated being spoken to like that and pretended everything was fine? I’ve been in two long term abusive relationships and am in counseling working on my self-esteem and not letting people treat me badly but I’m unsure if I’ve misjudged this?
