Have Expectations Changed For Our Children

I’m wondering if expectations of children have changed for the next generation? When I was little holidays were at Pontins or Haven , new toys were for birthday and Christmas, summer was parks or woods or beach, clothes were second hand and passed through siblings.

Expectation were low and everyone was happy. We were content with an hours worth of children’s tv shows, a handheld pac man game was the best thing ever.

Playing in the street with an old ball, hours upon hours of Kerby or bull dog home, bike rides and den building, may be a dip in the river or a visit to a friend’s house, we were never really alone, friends would come knocking and adventures were had.

Now it seems almost like we are expected to keep up with the Jones’s for the next generation. Children want more and more, they need to be constantly doing something or going somewhere, advertising is aimed at them and they expect the latest and best of everything. We would have to shop with our parents and not to moan not handed an iPad or a phone to keep us amused

Of course we don’t have to give into this, but I don’t remember my parents or grandparents feeling all this pressure!

May be I’m wrong and our parents did have pressure to be make us happy, but I feel I grew up grateful and thankful for all that I had.
