Hello, can I get some advice about school classes please?
My son is about to go into year 9 in September and RE has been made a compulsory class for everyone. I’m just wondering if anyone else has the same? I think there should be a choice to opt out, especially if my kid isn’t doing so well in English and maths. Need some help as I’ve been put off by one of the teachers. Many thanks 😀

  • Re is mandatory until 16. Many schools think that seeing as they have to study it anyway then they may as well do the GCSE/Shortcourse. It is not a specification focused on indoctrination anyway. It is optional in my school and students of all faiths and none do it and go on to enjoy it as an interesting and diverse A Level subject.

  • RE is actually a very important subject. It’s very useful to learn about different religions and cultures. If you feel that your children are falling behind maybe get a private tutor. Can’t expect the school to put on extra classes because you don’t want your child participating in RE.

  • I went to a catholic school with a compulsory re GCSE, it was a good class actually, learnt a lot about ethics, culture, debating, not just religion. I’ve found it looks good on my CV too, it didn’t take away from the other subjects and was a easy course tbh x

  • Is it a ‘faith’ school? It is not uncommon for RE to be a required subject in a lot of these circumstances

  • In my son’s school ‘re is mandatory unless your overall grades aren’t good enough in my son’s school if you grades are not a c or above then you wouldn’t do re
