Hello can I have a post please. My daughter is 14 weeks old and she’s on SMA milk her faeces is bottle green in colour and seems to struggle to go only goes around 3 times a week. I understand babies should have yellow faeces but apparently it’s something in the SMA milk that is making it green. Do you think if I change baby’s milk would it make it a normal colour will she go more often? I understand that I could have lactulose for her but I don’t really want to mess around with her bowels at such a young age and then she may be dependent on it forever. Or is this normal? Will she be better when she’s eating solid foods? Would you change the milk brand and if so how do I do it? Would I have to introduce it slowly or do a straight swap? I’m a ftm and have ask the health visitor who says it’s normal but I’m not happy as I can see how much she’s struggling and also when she breaks wind other people have commented on how bad it smells and asked if it was normal for a baby to smell that bad as they don’t think it is. Thankyou

  • My daughter had this we had her on cow and gate and dr told us to change her milk, I know they say aptimil is the same but it must have something different because it stopped her green poos so yes I’d say change but please do ask a dr aswell as I’m not a dr xx

  • I wouldn’t change milk based on the colour of poo… unless she seems in pain or its like diarrhea then I wouldn’t worry like above give some cooled boiled water between feeds to top up her hydration.

  • My 2nd child had green stools due to SMA – otherwise no issues with it though. Its due to being rich in iron etc & its just how your wee ones baby processes it. When my lo started solids his stools started to change colour. Unless she seems in pain with bowel movements I wouldn’t stress over it.

  • My son got really constipated on sma and my midwife told me to change because sometimes diff brands work better. Cow and gate was sooo much better never been constipated only occasionally during weaning and gripe water helped that

  • My twins are on SMA & have been since birth. The green colour is sadly a down side to all the lovely nutrients they now include in formula (iron, calcium, vitamin D ) & can occur with all brands. It can also be common to go a day or two between poos at this age. As for weaning helping – this can actually see it alter to lovely solid poo or the most horrendous smelling bottom explosions…

  • I always thought green poop meant trapped wind, my 3 year old suffers with bad trapped wind and I know when she’s suffering cos of the colour of her poop.
