Hi can you post private for me please?

Can anyone talk me through any complications etc that come with gestational diabetes? Midwives and doctors think I have it so going for a test, what’s the process from there? Been having a gander and saw you can be induced/have a section just wondered what the process was and if it’s a ‘worrying’ thing. Thanks πŸ™‚ xx

  • I went for a glucose test when I was 28 weeks came back I had gestational diabetes, I had to test my bloods 3 times a day and keep a monitor on it I had to go back every 2 weeks to see the consultant and every 4 for a scan to measure baby I went to get induced about 2 weeks before but when the examined me said it was pointless as I was already dilating and cervix was paper thin so a few days in hospital they took me to delivery suite and popped my waters and put me on a hormone drip my labour was only a hour and 18 minutes long! I was on metaphormin aswell

  • I had gestational diabetes with my first. Means checking blood sugars and keeping diet good. I ended up having insulin injections near the end. Have extra scans as they like to keep an eye on size of baby. I was induced at 38 weeks as again they don’t want baby to get too big, my daughter was only 6lb 5 though! Check baby and you again for diabetes after birth. Both of us were fine straight afterwards. Does put you at higher risk of getting diabetes later in life though x

  • You’ll be given a meter to test your blood sugars and will have regular growth scans, if you can control it with diet it’s better (low carb and high protein foods) if not you may need metformin and insulin, I’ve been type 2 since having gd 3 years ago, they’ll monitor babies blood sugars for 24 hours after birth or longer if they aren’t stable x

  • You’ll be closely monitored as well as gestation diabetes can cause the placenta to not work as effectively, so a smaller baby etc. I had a sweep at 37 weeks and then induced 2 days later when my waters went. It can also mean not gettinf the labour you wanted as if on insulin then have to be a in a consultant led unit x

  • I’ve got it at the min second baby you have to go for a fasting blood test at the hospital then drink a glucose during then waite 2 hours and have your blood done again and if there is anything wrong. With you bloods they will give u a call and ask you to go back to see the diabetes nurse were your given a a little meter to test your blood b4 and 1 hour after food. If the lady wants to inbox me she can xx

  • Hi. I had this with my last lg. you have a glucose test to measure the sugar your body is producing. It all sounds scary reading google i did the same. The drs check you more if you have gd so expect every two weeks an extra hospital visit. And extra scans to measure babys weight and growth as babys can get too big. If you have gd they wont let you go longer that 38 weeks. Just a thing they do and my lg came at this and was a good 6lb 15. I also had to have insulin as my body was a pain. And its normally sorted by diet. So checking ya blood on a machine gets boring towards the end. But hopefully you wont have it. And i saw the positive of seeing my baby big on the screen. Just more bloods weighing etc. Nothing wrong with monitoring. Good luck.

  • I had gd with my youngest as something showed on my 20 week scan was never tested with my 1st. Had it diagnosed by 22 weeks ended up on metformin and insulin tbh I had a awful time with it all :/ ended up planned csection at 38 weeks and a 2 week NICU stay for our little one xx

  • If your glucose levels are high in your blood (which is of course transferred through the placenta) it can make baby react and make more insulin and this can make baby grow larger than normal, so you may need a c-section or be induced.

  • I had undiagnosed gd with my daughter she was born naturally weighing 10lb 11oz I had it again with my son and was on insulin as mine was completely out of control no matter what I ate. I was induced at 38 weeks and he weighed 8lb 11oz

  • I had this with my first, basically checking blood sugar levels and good diet and extra scan to check growth, I had a completely normal birth at 37 weeks, healthly boy. X

  • I ve had it since 30 weeks baby can be born to big get there shoulders stuck an can end up an emergency I’m 38 weeks in remained diet controlled from a Facebook group, the advice they give you to eat on what to eat is no good if it wasn’t for the group I’d be on insulin by now. You need to add to eat stuff high in fat low in sugar an carbs an the protein needs to be higher than the carbs. Keeping your sugars as low as possible will do the baby good as they can come or having very low sugars or high an need extra help.

  • i had g.d in my last pregnancy. managed it with dietary changes, growth scans were fine. i opted to birth at home with careful monitoring as i felt the risks of induction and of having insulin on a sliding scale when it wasn’t required in pregnancy were higher than having baby at home. whatever you decide make sure you are fully informed before making decisions.
