Hi. Could I have a private post please.x
My daughter is 12 and in year 7 of secondary school. The headmaster has Broughty in a new rule regarding toilets. The students are banned from using the toilet at all during lessons unless the have a letter from the Dr. My daughter is really struggling with this because of very short breaks and only 30 minutes to queue for lunch and eat lunch and then queue for the toilet.
She is very stressed about it, as most girls would be because of periods.
I have a meeting with the deputy head on Friday and I’m just wondering if anyone else had any experience of anything gets similar.
Thanks in advance x

  • When i was in year 7 ( 2008 ) we had a 45 mins lunch break our first break waa only 15 mins but then all changed in year 9 only had 30 mins for both breaks and the queue was so long to get into the lunch hall you either had to be the first there or you wait for 10 mins to walk straight in then toilet everyone will be there as they changed the toilet to into one girls had one side and the boys had the other so always packed so girls would go into the boys and boys would go into the girls was a nightmare but i never really used the toilets as they was disgusting only when i was on my monthly and they probably give her a toilet pass if they do it at her school my partner got IBS and got a toilet pass from the school and all school have changed to that rule not going to the toilet during lesson its annoying cs people actually piss them selfs becuase there bursting ( my friend did) and another friend in year 9 her chair and the floor was full of blood cause the teacher wouldnt let her go soo i think every child should have the right to go when they need it x

  • This happened at my sons school. He was 15 at the time and more than capable of knowing when he needed the toilet. I emailed the head and explained he had been refused to go and was very clear that if he was refused again he had my express permission to go. I made it clear to him that this wasn’t me overruling the school etc but if he genuinely needed to go then he could. I also explained to head that I did not expect any further repercussions because of my decision. If your daughters school encourages them to stay hydrated throughout the day then they have to expect them to need the loo. Could you imagine the embarrassment if a child had diarrhoea or wet themselves. It’s terrible. Stand your ground. They can’t refuse.

  • When i was at school my dad always said if you need to go you get up and go and if they have a problem ill come in and see them (he always used to kick off with the headteacher) but hes righy and ill tell my kids the same its a basic human right to be able to use the toilet when you need to go and no one is going to tell my child they cant!

  • When I was at school we weren’t allowed using the toilets during class but if we were on our periods the teacher came up with a word we had to say so they knew if we really had to go and change our pad or whatever, it worked for us and obviously saved a bit of embarrassment with the boys in the class aswell as they didn’t know what we were talking about

  • Was just going to say against human rights, surely it’s a basic human right!! What u need to do is ask for a copy of the WRITTEN policy that would have been passed in the governors meeting and by the head of eduction!!! That will probably be enough to stop that nonsense! ! God luck xx

  • Also just to add not going to the toilet when you have the urge is likely to increase incontinence problems and water infections. I would be tempted to find research papers that back that up and take it in.

  • This was the rule at my school and I left 17 years ago so it’s nothing new. We could get a pass when we had our period or medical dispensation. Most of the teachers were cool though and give you a pass (although only one at a time, they weren’t daft to let a bunch of teens head to the toilet alone).I hated using the toilet at school,so much bullying took place in them. Just tell her if she needs the toilet, she goes
