Private post please. I have just received a letter from the NHS business service authority to say I falsely claimed free dental treatment BUT I have a tax credits certificate and currently get tax credits so I am confused. Has anyone had this and what was the outcome? They are saying I need to pay £153!

  • Please can you send a private reply. Yes I am entitled to free treatment and have a valid exemption card. It’s going to drive me mad as I can’t phone the dentist until Monday but I’ll ring the number on the letter in the morning. Thank you for your replies.

  • Don’t worry it’s a mistake on their behalf. Just call them and they’ll sort it out for you. The customer service is surprisingly really good and very friendly. I have a prepayment card for prescriptions as I was spending £40 a month on medicine. I got a letter for £126 owing and totally panicked. I called them and when they’d issued me with a new card my first name and surname had been typed in incorrectly so hadn’t recognised me. They sorted it out really quick over the phone.

  • You probably just ticked the wrong box, I’ve done it before ticked “M” instead of “H” easily done when you have kids to keep track of. I rung up and explained he just said chuck the letter that’ll take care of that and I’ll update our system. Done x

  • I had this happen to me, I called the number on the letter and explained I have a tax credits exemption and gave them the exemption number and they advised me to call the dentist and double check they had the correct details which I did and then I received a phone call from the business service as it turned out the dental practice had sent the wrong form off so it was their mistake, they apologized and cleared the charge, so maybe just give them both a call and ask why you have been charged if you definitely get free dental care x

  • This happened to me. They had my name wrote down wrong, they didn’t have the hyphen & another time it happened because my dentist is still under my mums address which it always has been which had never been a problem but because my card is registered at my address that’s where the confusion happened x

  • I used to get free dental but as my pay went up ever so slightly it ruled me out for free dental, I wasn’t informed of it until the card expired and they didn’t send a new one

  • Have you recently moved? I had this with my maternity card and it was because I’d moved and they hadn’t changed my address. Or have you changed your claim?

  • Having tax credits isn’t an automatic exemption. You have to have a valid card (or had one at the time of treatment). It might be that you ticked the wrong box. Call your dentist and see what they say

  • Are you entitled to free dental? Do you work? If you know you’re entitled just dispute it. Clerical errors like this happen all the time unfortunately!
