Can I have a post please – somthing happened in the car on the way home tonight, we have a jolie stages and I have it rear facing for my 14 month old daughter. After doing some running around this even my partner clipped our daughter into her car seat, and I packed the pram up and off we drove home half way home she was stood in the car seat ?!? I slammed the breaks on (wasn’t thinking properly as panicking) which chucked our daughter down into the foot well of the back seats! I oviously screamed and shouted at my partner as it must of bean his fault but he swears down she was clipped in correctly. This isn’t the first time Iv had problems with him clipping her into her car seat, he seems to think the straps need to be lose?!?

Now I’m not going mad am I – it is physically impossible for a 14 month out child unclip themself out of a car seat Isn’t it?!?

I’m bouncing off the walls here ?!????

  • My daughter is now 4 but when she went into her stage 2 carseat at 10mths i bought a joie one. After 2 mths the buckle broke, i took it back to toysrus where the item was on product recall. Id never buy Joie again x

  • When my eldest was 15 months old she could open every car seat clip we bought we tried a fair few and in the end had to turn the buckle round so she couldn’t get her fingers to it

  • I had a joie steadi for my son who is now 2 but he was 1 at the time and his seat belt came unclipped a couple of times and then we were on the motor way and all his straps were really loose and he was wiggling his way out . We turned straight round and toke it back where it came from and they swapped for completely diffrent make as it was faulty

  • My son could get the chip undone long before that age. I would put them as tight as I could and he could still get them undone. He also could undo every type of child lock to the point where we hug bell in all the doors so we knew if he left a room.

  • We’re the straps undone when you got to her or were they still clipped in and she was just out of the seat?

Maybe tell your partner to look up the safe guidelines on how a child should be strapped in and wny

  • my little boy has been unclipping himself since he was about 15 months, doesnt matter on the make of the car seat or how tight the straps are the little monkey still manages đŸ™ˆ, xx

  • Why does he think the straps need to be loose? They absolutely do not. They need to be as tight as you can get them without them hurting or cutting off circulation. Sounds to me from what you’ve said he’s put her in with straps too loose. Hopefully this will scare him into realising how they actually need to be. I know you shouldn’t have to but maybe just check straps everytime he puts baby in seat from now on and tighten them yourself x

  • It could be a case of not clipped in properly. I’ve done that with my daughter. Thankfully I always pull the straps to make sure she’s in ok and it popped out.

  • I have the same car seat and I even struggle to unclip the button sometimes so not sure how a 14 month old would! Hope your daughter and you are ok after the shock x

  • If the straps are lose then your child isn’t held in place should there be an accident they would be thrown around if u think it is faulty then take it back xx

  • These are great, stops them from wriggling out! Many different versions to suit the type of car seat and build of your child x

  • They can unclip themselves but if it’s only happening when he straps her in then it’s likely because he’s not doing it properly

  • We have got the joie stages, we started to realise that our daughter was getting her arms out a lot and her straps would get really loose. I took the car seat out and had a look and the mechanism that was supposed to keep the straps tight wasn’t working properly and even a slight bit of pressure it would come loose. We took it back to halfords they inspected it and gave us a brand new one. We haven’t had any problems since. Don’t know if something like this could have happened xx

  • My partner is crap at the car seat so I always do it. He doesn’t do it tight enough but don’t think he realises how tight they should be. I’ve tried teaching him but doesn’t help so I do it, or always check then before I drive. But toddlers are very good at copying us. Xxxx

  • I have a joie stages and rearfacing my LO. The straps need to be tight with shoulder pads on the shoulder. It doesn’t restrict the ability to use their arms to play with toys. I mean she could have learnt how to undo it but if you’ve had a problem with him not putting her in properly before then likely it was too loose. Show him how to do it properly and show him that when done properly you should be able to tip the car seat upside down with LO one in it and she shouldnt fall out or even move much.

  • Also i struggle getting the clip undone on my sons car seat so no i dont think she would be able to undo it herself. Pretty much physically impossible x

  • My 2.5 year old son can open the buckle on his car seat and has done since he was about 19 months , he only does it if i put the straps tight , if he has them loose so he can move his arms hes happy enough to sit there for hours but if i strap him in tight he opens it within about 3-5 minutes so i just let him have them loose now , YES i know they should be tight but if its loose straps or them being open and him climbing round the back of the car whilst im driving ill go with loose straps đŸ˜‚ x

  • I used to have seat from Mothercare with the button in between my son’s legs. You pushed the button to release the harness. He accidently kicked it with his heel one day and as he pulled up at the same time, it released him. He did it few times afterwards and we saw how it happened. First time it scared us like it did you. I took it back to Mothercare who argued that was not possible. I ended up buying different seat at the end.

  • You’ve got a faulty one. You need to take it back and get something else. Too many problems with joie

  • I’d get in touch with the company that made the car seat and have them check out the straps x
