Can I have a pp please x

Health visitor says I can’t pre make bottles and put them in fridge as once bottles are made they only last 2 hours then they have to be thrown away then they say you must make sure the water is at least 70 degrees to kill bacteria in the powder so my question is…when I go out how am I supposed to make a bottle..if I make it with boiling water it’s no good after 2 hours if I take boiling water and add milk later it won’t be hot enough to kill the bacteria.
Thanks x

  • People on here really annoy me…”my baby is healthy so it’s ok” your baby or child has obviously been lucky but some others will not be. Guidelines are there to help and protect your children not to ignore. Also sick of hearing ignore the health visitors..they aren’t the enemy for Christ sake they are to help and by convincing others not to speak to them you could be getting the mother to hide serious issues. Grab a flask Hun, fill it to boiling and make from there. Milk dispensers are fab and cheap as chips on Amazon. Just because other baby’s didn’t get Ill from not heating the bottles enough doesn’t mean yours won’t! Xx

Yes there are things you shouldn’t do but pre making bottles Is fine

  • I used to make my sons bottles twice a day, once in the morning before he woke up and then again at night when he went to bed, i’d let them cool then kept them in the fridge and warmed them when i needed them, but if i was going out for a few hours i would buy the ready made ones.

  • You used to be able to make formula and refrigerate it. You can’t do that anymore because formula has changed. Your only options are a thermos or making sure you are near somewhere you can boil water at feed time x

  • I used to use a thermos of boiling water (stayed really hot for the few hours I was usually out) and add pre-measured milk powder then cooled it all down in a jug of cold water from wherever we were feeding. Otherwise I just bought a carton of premade milk and used that (the premade milk in cartons is sterile) xx

  • People need to remember guidelines are in place for a reason. Formula has changed over the years and so has research. Would you half cook chicken and give it to your child? No because research shows it is unsafe same as research shows that formula needs to be put in hot water to kill bacteria otherwise it’s unsafe!

  • I pre made my bottles for we hours and stored them in fridge. So long as water has been boiled before hand your fine. It’s w hours at room temperature. I done this for both my kids never once had a sick or fussy feed.

  • I buy the pre made milk in the little bottles and use those when we are out. I pre made bottles with my first and he was always ill. But we thought because other babies had been fine that it wasn’t the problem with us. With my second we made them when we needed them and she is never ill doesn’t have bowel problems like my son did. So it’s not safe to pre make them your putting your child at risk of being ill x

  • This states that if you need to store a feed it should be stored at the back of the fridge and used within 24hrs. I was given a leaflet 6w by the hospital when I left with my little on. It’s an NHS guide to bottle feeding

  • I just put boiling water in my son’s bottles every night and when he’s ready for a bottle I tip some of the cooled boiled water out and add 50ml of boiling hot and then add the formula I also leave his bottles pre made in the fridge sometimes and when I go out I just put boiling water in half and warm boiled water in the other half and he’s fine, but I’ve been doing it since he started on formula so I guess he’s just used to it now 😊

  • I used to part fill my bottles with cooled boiled water and keep freshly boiled water in a metal flask to add to the bottle when needed. Temperature was perfect for the milk (takes a few times to figure out the right temperature for the amount of oz your baby needs each time they go up) this was an absolute godsend as i didn’t need to hang around waiting for bottles to heat/cool especially at night with the all dreaded 2 am feed! Hope this helps xx

  • If they are on formula just buy a couple of the ready made bottles to take with you, if I’m going out for the day that’s what I do, they last all day until you actually open them then it’s the two hour guideline, costs ya bit of money but it’s so much easier and you don’t have to wait for it to cool down with a screaming baby in the pushchair, just pour it in the bottle when theyre hungry =) x

  • The 2 hours only applies if anyone has touched it as in your child has some and doesn’t finish it. Most formula tins say that a bottle can be kept up to 24 hours in the fridge as long as it hasn’t been used

  • If u r worried u can buy pre mix formula for when u go out. Boots, sainsburys, asda, tesco, superdrug all sell them most supermarkets will u can buy large bottles if ur going out all day or smaller ones even those little ones they give u in hospital. Don’t stress u will find what works for u with time X

  • It’s best to take boiling water (in an insulated bag) or flask, a powder dispenser and then when you are ready to feed.. mix it and cool down in s jug of cold water. If you don’t have access to a jug of water I’d recommend ready made formula. As soon as water and milk powder mix, they start to produce bacteria so the longer they are kept separate, the better. Although books tend to say discard a feed after 2 hours, 1 hour is better especially when warm. Baby milk isn’t sterile so the heat from the boiling water will kill the bacteria in the milk. Also in the fridge if you do store any feeds, you do need to use the main shelf rather than the door as they are different temperatures. I hope that helps you, I can be overwhelming having so much information x

  • You’re not supposed to have formula milk prepared and made for over 2 hours. Sometimes you slip up though and lose track of time it happens. But if you’re going out you’re suppose to either have a flask full of just boiled water and the powder formula separate and make em as your baby’s due or put just the boiled water in the bottles with the formula separate prepared for each feed. Breast milk can store for a lot longer

  • Get one of the keep warm bags because if it takes longer to cool then surely it will be able to be kept long. I had wee thermos bags for going out when mines were smaller. I must be bad I make mine up an hour before let cool and give when cool enough. And when going out now I make them before I go and warm up when out. But my youngest is 8 months now. It’s up to you how you do it. The hv will just be giving you the most updated guidelines. X

  • I had a tommee tippee flask for the water and milk holders for the formula just make as usual, the flask also has a plastic cover which can be used for cooling the bottle. Used this method for 3 out of my 5. The guidelines where different when I had the eldest two.
