Can I have a private post please? Sorry its a long one.
Im so torn I dont know what to do with my dog as he has gone for me and bitten my hand. He is a 12yr old border collie. This evening he snuck out of the gate when I came home. Took me a few min to realise he’d gone. So I went onto street to look for him. He was on neighbours drive a few doors down so I called his name. He then looked at me and bolted towards main road at the other end of the estate. I took up the chase and caught up with him. He is old with arthritis and so is not a fast runner anymore, otherwise I’d never have reached him before he would have been run over. Also its 1st time hes done the running of thing- he always comes when called.
Anyway, when I caught him I grabbed his collar to stop hin running into traffic. This is when he shook me off and bit my hand- not hard and let go. I thought it was because he was spooked, so i grabbed his collar again and started to walk back home with him as i didnt have his lead. Half way home he tried to shake my hand off again and then he nipped my other hand. The rest of the way home was a fight, so i put him in the back garden which is secure. He then managed to push past me and get into the house which i wasnt comfortable with as all kids were in the house inc a toddler. So I called for the dog to go back outside, thats when he clamped down on my hand again and again. I had to force him out of the house. He is still outside now. He has never bitten before. His teeth are very worn down and rounded so my skin hasnt been broken, but it is extremely swollen and very sore. Iv had him since he was 6weeks old and iv no idea what to do now. He is never left unsupervised with kids anyway. Im guessing if hes done it once he can do it again, but im at a loss of where its come from 😭😭

  • My parents has a border collie when I was growing up he was a softy when I was little I could do anything then when he was around the same age your dog is now and he turned and but my dad. Funny enough he had arthritis in his back legs.
He did attack again so in the end we had to have him put down because my parents didn’t want to risk it and also he’s back legs gave out too so it was best decision all round. But it was hard to say good bye as we also had him from pop (sorry. If this doesn’t make a lot of sense) but I think once they done it once they will do it again x

  • I would book a vets appointment and speak to them, to me it sounds like he could possible have a brain tumour or is in pain. For him to suddenly change his behaviour like that I would think illness or something has happened to him you’ve maybe not witnessed. Xx

  • Iv 2 BC’s and this is heart breaking. Take him to the vet first thing. He’s clearly in some kind of pain. Bring him in & keep him in the kitchen with his bed or some blankets. Keep us updated xx

  • Dogs can get dementia I’m sure. He’s maybe getting a bit confused in his old age. Take him to the vet and get him checked x

  • First thing I would do is get him checked over by the vet, it could be anything, sore ears or neck for example that’s caused him to react the way he is

  • My dog used to do a runner towards the flats by us to scav around the communal bins and if I tried to pull hm home by his collar he did not like and used to growl at me so I got wise and took his lead with me and he would come back good as gold and he was with me from 5 months old til 15 year’s old and never bit anybody despite him being a rescue dog x
