  • I have just getting back from Spain today. My daughter has a different surname to me had no problem getting in to Spain only coming into this county. Border control asked to see her birth certificate which I had. I also sed I had a letter from her dad saying it was fine. The man sed its best to have birth certificate and a photo copy of my daughters dads passport as well x

  • I flew out to Spain 5/6wks ago with my mum and my daughter who has her dads sure name. I didn’t even think of it to be an issue, it didn’t cross my mind. I flew out fine, flew back fine but when going through border control at Bournemouth airport once I’d landed home he made a comment about my daughters sure name. But let me through no problem. But it wasn’t until then that I actually thought about it! I was carrying no ID or birth certificates to prove she was my daughter xx

  • I had a different surname than my oldest daughter and the few times I had to fly out with her to see family on my own i took a note from my now husband to say it was ok for me to take her out of the country and he was aware of the dates we were flying in and out. I was stopped the first time i flew out with her and didnt have a note or her birth certificate with me. I took me 30 mins yo convince them i was her mother and that my husband knew.
It was terrifying to say the least but its good to know they check and make sure the child is with rightful parent or family.
Now married i have the same surname but my passport is still in my maiden name so until that runs out I still need a note to take both my daughter’s out of the country to see family.

Birth certificate should be enough, either one of them as they state all they need to know. If you feel unsure, and it’s possible, ask the father for a written consent with all flight details etc on and sign it

  • My mum and step dad have taken my son abroad 3 times to different countries I’ve always written a consent letter with my passport number on and she’s never had to show it they don’t have the same surname x

  • My lg has a different surname to me and we’ve travelled loads but on our most recent trip in May we were stopped and questioned. When i asked how they would like me to prove I’m her mum I wasn’t told to bring a birth certificate or copy of my partners passport……..I was told I should have a hand written letter from her dad 😂 it’s absolutely ridiculous (can’t anyone write a letter?). Why can they not store parents information on children’s passports, they have microchips in?! Anyway they let me keep my daughter 😂

  • I recently flew to Italy and customs made comment to em regarding my girls different surname … he said it wasn’t an issue because they were of an age where he could ask them questions … but if they are babies or unable to communicate then you need proof i.e. Birth certificate etc .. xx Hope this helps x

  • I was questioned at an airport once for the same reason as I had my maiden name still on my passport but they let us go through very quickly. Do you have something like a school letter addressed to you as her parent or something similar?

  • They are cracking down on all of this it’s the chance you take they may refuse you. I always keep a copy of birth certificate with my kids passports just incase. I was coming home from Calais and it was the border control that told me if I was traveling alone with my kids (partner was there that time) i must have birth certificate and note from father I had permission to take them out of country many think it’s frustrating but I personally think it’s a good thing too many child trafficking and kiddies disappearing now days x

  • It’s coming back in you’ll need it. I went to Turkey recently and it was fine going out but they asked for it coming back in. If you can get a letter from her dad giving you permission to take her away you’ll be fine x
