Hi, I wondered if you could post privately for me please?

Hi ladies I wondered if anyone could help me out with this please?

My son has recently been awarded DLA, I’m a fulltime mum and my husband works 39 hours a week. My friends have told me that I can claim carers allowance which I’ve phoned them and they’ve told me I would be able to claim as I look after my son more than 35 hours a week. My husband does not want me to claim for carers allowance as he says it will affect our child tax credit. I wondered if anyone could tell me how it affects it please? Thank you

  • It does effect your child tax credits as it is classed as another income you will have to tell them how much you would receive from careers allowance and they work it out that way x

  • It does not affect your tax credits . I actually get extra tax credits for my son due to him receiving middle rate care component dla and low rate and mobility and I myself get Carers allowance for him .x

  • Yes it does eeffect your tax credits! Its a taxable benefit so has to be declared! Sometimes it can be a good thing…. You could then earn enough to get working tax credits, or a bad thing… It could push you over the limit for recieveing tax credits x

  • You can only claim carers allowence if you earn less than £116 a week. Anything over this and they will stop paying. I had this problem last year as i was working for an agency and i earned more for a few weeks and mine was stopped.

  • I have been receiving carers allowance for 3 years for my eldest and it doesn’t effect my tax credits only my income support, and because my daughter receives dla my tax credits increased xx

  • I’m just about to put in for DLA for my lg….if I get it I won’t be claiming carers….as she’s my child and I look after her anyway.

  • I claim it doesn’t effect it. And make sure you tell tax credits your child is awarded dla as that will effect it but for the better x

  • It goes on income so if receiving tax credits etc itl go down as income so if partner is working u maybe worse off with tax credits etc if u get tax credit however let tax credit know make sure u call and not do it online also ask for it to be back dated to date on dla letter explain u was waiting on being rewarded it they will back date extra tax credits to that date if u explain why

  • It’s a taxable income so may push u over the threshold. If I remember right
