Hi. I’m looking for some advice on parents working rights. My OH has always taken our son to school, it’s quite a distance to walk and he drives, I don’t. Occasionally in the summer months we would walk and always walk home from school. When my other half takes him, it sometimes makes him 5-10 minutes late for work. To begin with it was fine and for a while he was allowed to start at 9 to compensate for this. Im not sure what went wrong(maybe the new manager) but this was starting to cause problems at work for him, which in turn has made my partner very unhappy there. To try to solve the issue we started all going on the school run in the mornings. This meant that myself and our son would be dropped off at school and would wait the 10 mins for school to open, meaning my OH could just about get to work on time. This had been working well, although things at work for my OH were still a bit tense. Things came to a bit of a head one day when I was ill and it meant my partner would have had to do the school run and be 5-10 mins late again. My OH refused to do the school run, saying he would be sacked and he couldn’t be late. Causing a bit of an argument. I was being obviously sick that morning and was in no fit state for a walk to the school. But he left anyway. Leaving our son sitting on the sofa wondering what was going on and if he’d be able to go to school and me sick and in tears. Surely as he has parental responsibility for our son also, he has a right to ask for flexi time to allow for the school drop off but he refuses to even put in a request. Saying things are already difficult at work and he wants to stick it out until after Christmas then just find a new job. I feel for him as it can’t be easy feeling uncomfortable at work, but it’s affecting our home life and family. I was willing to stick it out with him until he found a new job and continue doing the school run together allowing him to be on time. But couldn’t help being ill and how it was dealt with shows we need to do something. Just not sure what. I hope all that made sense 😕 Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks
