Hi everyone im 6 months pregnant now and today me legs have become unbearably swollen so i decided to go to the doctors, i told her that my legs are getting purple and very swollen which is becoming a nightmare to go to work as i go walking .. she just said this is normal … Normal ?? I told her that to me it didn’t seem normal as i wake up and go to sleep with swollen legs and feet and they are not even a normal color as they are purple she just laughed and basically told me that its normal. So im askingg you guys is this really normal for your legs to double in size and become purple ?? • Not to scare you..but this happened to me in my first pregnancy and my doctor told me I were fine… my mum knew different but didn’t say anything to me..anyway we went to get a second opinion and I had a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) 1 big one and several small ones in my left leg.. I don’t want to scare you but it is definitely worth getting it checked out.. I wouldn’t wish the pain and the trauma on my worse enemy so please go and get a second opinion xccc

  • I would seek advice from another doctor as when I was seven months I had this and I was sent the hospital for tests for a blood clotX three times I was scanned and was told I was fine and three days after giving birth i fell very poorly and was taken to hospital . Turned out I had a blood clot that travelled up and I nearly died.! Do not be fobbed of Hun you know your own body xxx

  • I’m 28wks and have some serious swelling going on! I literally look like I go from arse cheek to toe with no knee or ankle in sight! 😂 my BP is fine and so is my urine so consultant isn’t worried, baby moves fine etc.. they just put it down to the heat I work in and being on my feet all day. It’s ridiculously uncomfortable and quite painful some days but never not a normal skin colour. That’s worrying 😕 ring triage at your local maternity unit for some advice xxx

  • I walk a lot due to my job … I put swelling down to the heat last week but noticed this on both legs , doctor said it’s heat rash & gave me steroid cream , does go slightly when I rest but when I walk a far bit it comes up sometimes worse than this , I’m 24weeks on Thursday

  • I’d certainly be getting it checked anything out of the ordinary even if it seems minor or so small always always get it checked. Go with your gut as well don’t leave anything to chance it could be nothing and like I copied the link from the nhs website maybe due to standing for long periods or warmer weather during pregnancy you hold so much water which goes to the Lowest points hence why we get kankles and swollen legs but for me id get it checked over. Xx

  • This happened to me too and midwife told me it was normal, i went to doctors for second opinion and he told me to go to a&e which i did then they kept me in and sent me for a scan looking for clots. They found pre eclampsia instead and it had started effecting my liver and kidneys so i was induced there and then. Please dont take any chances xx

  • I had this the last few weeks of my pregnancy or when it was hot, so long as your blood pressure is fine and baby is maintaining normal movement then don’t worry. Elevate them as much as possible. I also used to put cold flannels on mine. Don’t wear socks or tight shoes

  • It’s not normal to be purple, go to the hospital. I had back ache and thought it was sciatica and I had a big DVT in my left leg, I wasn’t pregnant at the time. Now I’m on blood thinners as the risk in pregnancy is huge anyway, without previous ones.

  • No its not normal…especially with a colour change and it being constant with no relief. …see someone else …you may have preeclampsia

  • I would seek a second opinion, probably a midwife is better than a doctor in many ways. I did swell a lot in the last 4 weeks or so but my legs didn’t go purple. I had to have medication during labour to reduce my blood pressure and be monitored hourly afterwards as they must have been worried I’d develop pre eclampsia. I really don’t think it’s normal to be that bad!

  • Seek advice from a different doctor it’s not normal I’m a first time mum and my legs and feet never done that and I was constantly on my feet x

  • Sounds like high blood pressure to me which causes pre eclampsia which is very dangerous for both u & baby. I’d call ur midwife xx

  • Lie on the floor with ur bum against a wall and your legs up the wall for a wee while that’s what I was told to do x

  • Definitely NOT normal. Go to the hospital to get checked out. Could be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Xx

  • The midwife always asks if u have any swelling in ankles etc as its a sign of pre eclampsia i think x
