I’ve been with my partner for 3 years now. I have a 2 year old with my surname (not biologically his) but we’ve been together since I was 3 months pregnant! He’s been there for us both ever since the day we met. Anyway, we’re due another baby in the next few weeks who will obviously have his surname. We’re also looking at getting engaged. I’d like to change my 2 year olds surname to his. Her sperm donor has no contact and isn’t on the birth certificate and non contactable. I’ve read online that it’s easy to change her surname as I’m the only one with parental responsibility.

My questions are –

Do I just fill out a deed poll form online and then it’s done?
Do I need to go through court?
Does it change her name on the birth certificate to her new surname?
Do I get anything saying that it’s all legal and binding and her surname has changed?

Has anyone been through this and can help? How long does it take? I’d love to get it done and tell him at Christmas! Or if it takes longer I can leave it for his birthday.

Mostly though I don’t want my 2 year old to feel left out when we all have the same surname and they don’t and he’s always has and always will be daddy xx
