My son is 10. He has always been a fidget. He is unable to keep still or behave in a social setting. If we go for food he keeps moving, picking at things. If we go out he jumps and gambols about. He is always climbing. He struggles with his school literacy work but excels at maths and art. I ask him to behave, calm down etc and it lasts minutes before he is off again. I have always just put it down to being a boy but hoped he would have grown out of it now.
He chews his clothes or picks holes in them. Going out is a complete nightmare because of him. He is always putting things in his mouth. Should I be worried or is he just boisterous? Any advice greatly appreciated x

  • Could you comment on my post please. He is a fussy eater. Things can’t go together. Like beans have to be in a bowl not on toast. He refuses to even try some foods but has improved as he gets older.
If he behaves at school how he does at home then im sure it would of been picked up on. One teacher mentioned 2 years ago that she thought he was dyslexic x

  • Perhaps do some research on SPD (Sensory progressing disorder). He does sound like she maybe on the spectrum somewhere. Please don’t be scared of this. It doesn’t make him different, he just learns differently x

  • Sounds very much like my son. You can get his attention for short periods but otherwise he runs/climbs/jumps. I can’t take him anywhere without him doing it. At home, inside, when at school, he is just off. He is under peads and just had a updated sensory profile where they have given me lots off advice (we already do). Trampoline is one off the best things for him.

  • You sound exactly like your describing my son also, he is 7. Cannot sit still cannot do simple tasks like put shoes on without being told a lot of times as he gets distracted so easily or just forgets. He also runs very strangely, leans forward and always looks like he’s going to trip up. He hates loud places and loud noises. Ive spoken to the school and they don’t think there is anything to worry about at all. I’m stuck of what to do too.

  • The best thing you can do is first speak with the school ask for a meeting with the teacher to see how he functions in the classroom. Ask things like how is he around other children, does he work well in groups or better on his own etc , then take him to the doctors explain all of your concerns he will refer you to the hospital whilst you’re waiting on your referral keep a diary of your sons routine Likes dislikes habits and behaviours, my daughter is autistic and it took 18 months of assessments before she was put in for the ados test, she is 4. Good luck if you need a chat you’re welcome to message me xx

  • I would say he displays lots of ADHD traits but you need to speak to your GP. Schools do not usually place it as high priority unless their education is seriously affected. What area are you in? Some local ADHD charities might be a good starting point to see how you would get him assessed.

  • He just sounds like a normal boy not all boys like reading or find it easy maybe he is just a boisterous boy I’m sure this would have been picked up I’m school if he had a condition

  • Sounds like my son and he’s just a sensitive boy , I even took him to be assessed and the school thought there was something wrong to but nope he’s perfectly fine just a child who knows what he likes and what he doesn’t . Sometimes putting socks on was a nightmare , he never used to eat anything only if it had cheese on top , he makes silly noises rolls around the floor and my sofa . Like a monalog the teacher said , He’s amazing at English and making things. Gets upset very easy , great sleeper ect , what ever you do don’t google his symptoms as you will be like yep that’s my kid lol it’s the worst thing you can do , if your really worried take him to the doctor , I had to wait a year to be assed and that year was so bad as I would just be worrying about every little thing he did x

  • That deffinently sounds like he’s on the autistic scale somewhere. I’d say at 10 he should be able to have an assessment
