Hi can I have a pp please.
Does anyone know anything about changing a child’s name via deed poll when they have the mothers Surname?
My daughter (from a previous relationship) would like to change her last name to match mine, her step dad and her little sister. Her biological dad is on the BC but has had no contact for 5 years (his choice) and we have no idea where he is. He literally turned up to register her and hasn’t been fussed since.
She has had my surname from birth and that’s her name on her birth certificate so wouldn’t be changing from his name. She’s 6 years old and very grown up for her age. Thankyou for any advice given.

  • Yes I did both my boys 5 years ago through deedpol. Same situation. Put it in a letter like I had to. Explain you have been using your surname for years as fathers whereabouts are unknown

  • No – go to a lawyer if the father hasn’t been in contact for so long you are able to change it without his permission , can’t remember how many years but it’s not far off of 5 x

  • u can just change it with doc school etc but u cannot legally change it till age of 16 unless u go to court and judge grants it or u gave fathers permission

  • I think you still have to have his consent for any name changes, however, if he’s been absent I’m sure there’s a way you can get around this. Someone will know x

  • I did with my eldest. It was dead simple and because he lived with me I didn’t need Dads permission.
